In November 1938 on completion of his term of servicein the Far East he returned to UK by the troopship Lancashire and joined HM Submarine Triumph under construction by Vickers at Barrow. On completion of its sea trials he was further posted to HMS Oswald, an old vessel saved from the breaker's yard by the political situation. Oswald was posted to the Mediterranean based at Malta. By June 1940 when Italy declared war Oswald was on patrol between Malta and Alandria. In the Straits of Messina Oswald was discovered and rammed by an Italian destroyer, the author being one of the survivors and he goes on to recount his time in an Italian prisoner-of-war camp, the abortive escape plans, his bid for freedom and his betrayal to the Germans, lightly rubbed at tips, pages a little tanned. very good plus,
